Jared Maples, an avid entrepreneur spanning a few different industries (film & video, tech, affiliate subscriptions) shares with us some of his thoughts regarding this next wave of young entrepreneurs and the common mistake they make that holds them back.
Entitlement to/for time, money, or service.
The first mistake early connectors and entrepreneurs make is expecting others to give their time, money, or service without a relationship established.
Jared shares “I see it all over social media. Someone successful will post something and tons of comments and direct messages flood in asking for handouts.” Their intentions may be pure but the method is flawed.
Instead, young entrepreneurs should build relationships founded in service and asking those they are trying to reach what they can do for them and how they can serve and contribute to their life. Jared mentioned, “Early in my entrepreneurial journey I would reach out and ask successful people that I looked up to what they needed help with the most and then offer the help free of charge to gain proximity to their success…Every-time I reached out I was greeted with open arms because people love to be taken care of and looked out for.”
When you show up in service and offer something free (your time, energy, service), you will find that the quality of your relationships and circle will grow more fruitful and become more willing to help you in what you are passionate about or working towards.
