Walk me through your childhood, what was it like growing up?
I was born and raised throughout many areas in South Central LA. Growing up, I only had my mom. My dad wasn’t really in the picture and whenever he was, shit would go left. I wasn’t hurting for a father figure though, because I always had my Grandaddy. I never had to deal with going hungry or nothing of that nature. Although my mom had me at a young age, her head was on straight and she knew how to survive. We may have had to ride the Metro a few times throughout my childhood but for the most part she had a car. My mom always been a hustler. However she could take care of me and my siblings, she’d get things done.
Throughout my childhood, we moved around a lot so I ended up transferring from school to school. I never was able to settle down because I would be at a new school almost every other school year. I went to 4 different elementary schools, 2 different middle schools, and 3 different high schools as a kid. I used to get into a bunch of fights and stuff throughout elementary because I was a bit of a hot head at that time. Ive never been the one to start anything with anybody but I was always taught to be the one to finish it. I was a bit smaller than everyone throughout my grade school years so, I was what many thought would be an easy target. I had been kicked out of schools and after school programs due to fighting. Third grade came around and I felt like I was where I wanted to be, but my mom had me enrolled in the same performing arts school she went to as a kid for my 4th & 5th grade year. It was way out of the way so I had to get bussed out early every morning. I got most of my sleep on the school bus in the morning. I would get into plenty disputes at this school as well with other students because I didn’t look like them. The school was in a predominantly white neighborhood and had plenty diversity, but they could tell which kids were getting bussed out to the school versus the kids who knew where they were. Being there, kind of planted the seeds for my love of music though.
Where did your love for music begin and who were some of your influences at that time?
My love for music really began just being around my mama and her siblings. Whether it was at home or in the church. I grew up listening to just about everything, so that’s why I can make a wide range of music. I grew up listening to a lot of Suga Free, DJ Quik, Snoop, Timbaland, Lil Jon, E40, Hot Boyz, Ludacris etc. That barely covers a spec of the hip-hop I heard, but I tried to show just a little bit of range. My mom still had me off all the Kirk Franklin and gospel records, as well as all the sub genres of R&B, bro-soul,Kelly Clarkson, rock music, and more. It’s so much music in the world to enjoy. It’s hard for me to stay one dimensional because of how I was brought up.
As far as influence, I like to make what I hear. I don’t really have any set influences and I rather leave that up to people to decide who they think I sound like. Growing up though, Lil Jon, Manny Fresh, and DJ Quik were by far my favorite producers so there may be a bit of influence there just because those are a few of my favorites.
How does it feel to finally share your mixtape, Too Hard To Handle?
To be honest, it feels great. The reception and love I’ve been getting is way more than I imagined. The people that know me personally know that I’m not the flashiest person and that I’m really about putting in the work and trying to stay as quiet and under the radar as possible while the work is in the process of being made. So I’m sure a lot of people including myself, didn’t imagine the amount of recognition and love that I’ve been receiving to be on this kind of scale.
Which one of the records on that project means the most to you?
I love every song on the tape in a different way because the process of creation for all of the songs had similarities but yet so many differences. Honestly I believe that the single ‘Too Hard To Handle’ means a lot to me because it’s the track to set the tone for the tape and I was motivated because I was literally watching the Grammys while creating the record. I must say though, ‘Outta Here’ holds a very special place in my heart. I feel like that’s a motivational track fro anyone that’s tryna make it out of the hood. Like just the amount of things my mother and I have experienced together is crazy so for me to kind of direct a message to her letting her know we about to make it out, it’s just another feeling.
In regards to the features, how did you go about picking them out?
I have my own studio that I run with my engineer AudemarAleyse. So with that being said, we get a lot of artists that come through and record, but we basically went through the best features I had that fit the mold of the title of the tape and what were going for. We locked in with each of them differently. We locked in with ERIICH through one of our artists Bankroll Troub. He came to the studio, and it was actually the same day as my Grandaddy’s funeral. It was just real easy to get shit done with bro. He’s very humble and easy going, but can come with some bars that you may not have thought of. Chloeezy and I got locked in through one of my producers KouchSurf, from my producer team. I wanted to get her out of her comfort zone to make something different, and that’s how we came with ‘Dripped Out In Paris’. Getting her out of her comfort zone paid off because that’s a lot of people’s favorite track. DMAR & me have been locked in since I was in 11th grade. He transferred to my high school once I was a senior, but from day 1 that’s been my brother. I really just did the same thing with him that I did with Chloeezy. Got him out of his comfort zone and forced him to create a whole different type of vibe. I always knew my nigga had it in him though because we would have smoke sessions and he’d freestyle and rip beats for hours until it was time to spark up again. I always told my mom if I could get bro in the studio, shit was going to get real crazy for sure and now I’m honored to have one of my brothers on my debut mixtape.
What direction do you see yourself going in the coming year?
The direction I see myself & my team going this year is the only way we can go and that’s up. I’m trying to lock in on some hit records this year as a producer and artist. I know I can bring a lot to the table and it’s just about being in the most genuine situations to get things done the right way.
I’ve been running an indie label/music group Humble Heart Entertainment for about 8 months and we’ve accomplished way more in all of our careers in these past 8 months than we ever did alone. We have a lot of tricks up our sleeve. We got a few secret weapons and are always looking to add more to the roster and our arsenal. I’m just thankful that God is putting us in position to be heard and to take a different path from any other artist, team or group.
