Mount Caroll based couple namely Doug Sherf and Lori Mostad have spent five years of hard work to renovate a 150-year-old structure. The couple gave a location name to the old structure 105 N. Clay St. in Mount Carroll. The yellow brick home was built in 1873 by Uriah Green. According to Doug Sherf, the yellow brick structure was only a Milwaukee cream brick house in town. In 1841, a native of Pennsylvania moved to rural Carroll Country for making a living in farming and raising livestock. Later, the native moved to Mount Carroll in 1873 when the house was built.
In 1900, a Downing family purchased the house and till some time it was famous as the Downing house. Later in 1948, the Downing house turned into a home apartment for rent. In March 2014, Sherf and Mostad purchased it. The couple moved to Mount Carroll from Minnesota to work full time on the house. During the past five years, the couple did everything to make the house their home. In many rooms, they removed the trim of walls for binding and labeling them. The couple wore masks to remove the paint because the paint was lead-based.
The home of 38 windows and wall frames were renovated with quality wooden windows to make gaps in the bay window. In most of the rooms, portions of the wall were repaired to allow spray foam insulation. They successfully executed all the complex projects of the house taking help and ideas from www.fenestrum.lt. Sherf has some experience in home repair, where she learnt it from her father and Mostad helped her in all the ways.
