San Diego and other communities across the country are making programs available to help senior adults. Among 55+ adults, social isolation is an epidemic growing steadfastly. AARP has said that isolation and the physical health risk associated with it has affected more than 8 million adults. A study stated that prolonged isolation is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
The senior adult programs are for adults who are retired or working, comfortable financially or struggling to get by, local seniors are sharp, active, and curious. The older adults don’t see themselves like previous ones.
For them age is just a number now as they are healthier, more cognitively fit, and most importantly better educated than any previous generation. They have been keeping up with advances in technology too and regularly following some tips for healthy aging. San Diego programs are offering such resources and opportunities that is redefining what aging means to the world.
There is higher education being offered at low-cost, plus there are skill-building courses to help older adults re-join the workforce. For instance at San Diego Oasis, older adults can choose from around 3k workshops, lectures and programs that are available at all the 45 locations in the region. The workshops are free or at a low cost, average cost being $10.
The local organisations and groups are on a mission to keep seniors fit and healthy in body, mind and spirit so they have introduced classes in balance, strength training, water fitness, yoga, soul line dancing at neighbourhood centres. The focus of these organisation is to remind all that no matter how old people get, they always can learn and have something to offer.
