Indonesia is taking a step to add more in its coffee industry that is at number three position for producing robusta coffee. Pranoto Soenarto is the deputy chairman of the Association of Indonesian Coffee Exporters and Industries. He said that the country is on a mission to expand the output of coffee when the production is increasing and prices are lowering. The country is taking help of stakeholders and roasters to work for the welfare of farmers with funding and increasing productivity.
There is an increase in supply from the Southeast Asian nations which can pressure robusta’s future. Indonesia is also focusing on competing with producers from Vietnam and Brazil who are the major producers of arabica coffee.
The country is working on a road map for boosting production with many other stakeholders such as the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute and the agriculture ministry. The road map will allow farmers to use quality fertilizer and seeds so that the coffee companies could do better coffeextraction for commercial coffee machines.
Petalnad’s coffee robusta accounts for about 72% of total coffee output in the country and arabica holds 18 percent. And others such as Liberia and excelsa beans have minor roles. There are almost two million farmers involved in coffee cultivation in the estimated area of 1.2 million hectares. The total output of coffee in the country is estimated at 700,000 tons. The coffee association expects the great demand for coffee from China because the consumption ahs increased more than nine times in the past decade.
