Diablo II made Battle.net what it is and shaped an entire generation of games. People might point that objectively there are better action RPGs than Diablo II but still Diablo II is worth playing as it single-handedly changed everything for the landscape of how action RPGs were played. It bought action adventure genre to life. The game was released 2 decades ago but there is a nostalgic trip this game leads to when it all started and that is worth more than new games having new technological advancements.
Games like Dark Souls are all inspired from Diablo II. The isometric click based combat of game has left its imprint on plethora of games. When recommended players recommended the latest version Diablo III to fellow players or new players but playing Diablo II is a better game even though the graphics might seem dated. But those graphics meant a lot when compared to games that were present when it was launched in the 2000.
Diablo 2 and its expansion Lord of Destruction have superior stories than Diablo III. And hence people still buy Diablo 2 items more instead of other versions of this game. There is more pathos and surprises in the game. As the game moves forward the more tension keeps building and draws more of the attention. It is one of the purest and most committed game of dark, brooding and Gothic action RPG.
The game reshaped the genre completely and their designs are influenced by Diablo II. It has a unique story and that inspired the current games to operate with a good story line even when the world of games is graphics heavy. Diablo II is where it all started and it is worth knowing and playing the first game of the genre.
