This edition of Sessions with Hot Money looks at Hot Money Studios founder Patrick Osei’s experience with the sensational UK Hip Hop duo Krept and Konan.
The duo smashed the record for highest charting UK album by an unsigned act in 2013 with ‘Young Kingz’ which reached 19 in the UK album chart and 3 in the UK R&B chart which led to them winning MOBO awards for Best Newcomer in 2013 and Best Hip-Hop act in 2014. Also in 2014 came a BET award for International Act.
A creative powerhouse
Patrick – “It was in 2010 when I worked with Krept and Konan. A regular client brought them into the studio to work on a song. The first thing that struck me was their immense work effort. There was a lot of buzz on the underground circuit around them at the time through their freestyle videos.
They had this amazing talent and their writing was incredible, unlike anything in the scene at the time. They wrote these amazingly catchy punch lines that no other MC at the time could even get close to.
So when they came into the studio I couldn’t wait to watch how they worked and to see their process.
In just an hour I watched them write their lyrics on the spot, work through them and absolutely nail their vocal performance.
There are very few artists who could go from concept to creation to performance in only an hour; it takes a very special creative focus and talent to work so dynamically and it was a privilege to be a part of.
It was great watching their subsequent journey and to see that they’re still an active voice in the music industry, even having the time to open their own successful restaurant in Thornton Heath.
