Veronica Cooper took to Instagram Live to answer questions from fans. One question’s answer stood out above the rest. Fans mentioned how similar her name was to the female leads from The CW show “Riverdale.” Veronica laughed and admitted that her name is in fact inspired from the characters but not from the Tv series but from the comic books.
“When I was younger my great grandmother would take me to the corner store to buy lotto tickets and Archie comic books. We would sit and read them. This is my favorite memory with her.” She later explains why the characters inspired her by saying, “When I started taking music seriously, everyone said I needed a stage name that defined who I wanted to be. Archie had two love interests. Veronica Lodge, your popular girl, fashionable, wealthy, focused, and just an overall bad ass. Betty Cooper was your girl next door type. She baked, fixed cars, extremely smart, and just the type of person you would want to get to know. I wanted to be the best of both worlds and that’s how Veronica Cooper was born.”
Veronica admitted to owning over 350 comic books from the various Archie series that have been out for over 82 years. She is still actively in search of the very first 3 of the original series which would complete her first 100 collection. She mentioned that the tv series and the comic books are only similar in the name of the characters but not the storylines. Although she showed her support of the show she said she wished they would have just kept to the comic book storyline because she was more connected to it.
Archie Comics is an ongoing comic book series featuring the character Archie Andrews. The character first appeared in Pep Comics in 1941. Archie became very popular helping him to gain his own self-titled comic book series which began publication in 1942 and ran until 2015. A second series began publication in July 2015, featuring a reboot of the Archie universe with a new character design aesthetic and a more mature story format and scripting, aimed for older, contemporary teenage and young adult readers. This version may have influenced the storyline of the show we now know as Riverdale.
But what is Veronica’s real name you may ask? Jazmyn Jones-Akins. Now that was not expected.
