Having a driver’s license comes with responsibility as well. You need not only drive carefully but keep in mind that you do not collect demerit points. Because if you collect more, then it may cost you your driver’s license. Here are few things you need to understand about demerit points and your driver’s license.
Unlike other points system, you do not lose demerit points. You start with zero points with your driver’s license. But then, you start gaining points if you are convicted of breaking traffic laws, including stunt driving charge Ontario. Demerit points stay in your record for two years. But if you collect enough points then you may lose your license.
Here are the conditions when demerit points Ontario are added. 7 demerit points are added when you fail to remain at the scene of a collision or fail to stop when signaled or asked by a police officer.
6 demerit points will be added if you are speeding, racing, doing careless driving, or failing to stop for a school bus. 5 demerit points are added when you fail to stop at an unprotected railway crossing (for bus drivers only).
4 demerit points will be added if you are speeding or following too closely. 3 demerit points will be added if you are using a wireless device while driving. There are many conditions why demerit points can be added.
If you are a fully licensed driver then with 2-8 points you will receive a warning letter, at 9-14 demerit points you will receive a second warning letter. At 15+ points your license will be suspended for 30 days. But if you are a new driver then your license may get suspended for 60 days.
