Swiss Basketball League player, Kaanu Olaniyi, makes the headline again as he causes uproar in the league
Kaanu Olaniyi can seem to have his name off the headlines of major newspapers, especially in the sporting world as he again made the news in a seemingly bitter-sweet way. In 2017, he made the headlines after he was selected among the 14-players list from the coach of the Swiss Basketball team, Gianluca Barilari to play Macedonia for the first competition window for pre-qualification for when EuroBasket 2021 tournament. These were seemingly early days in his career when he was plying his trade for Union Neuchâtel Basket.
After arguably making his mark at the club, Kaanu joined BC Boncourt were he almost immediately made his presence felt. While he made a strong appearance for the team on the court, he fell on the wrong side of the law a couple of times. One of such occasions include getting a two-match suspension following a squabble that resulted in the player throwing the ball in the direction of one of the referees during a playoff quarter final game of the Swiss Basketball League.
Away from the 2018/19 controversy on the court that includes a suspension for two matches, Kaanu did not let the issues affect his performance. He again displayed the prowess that made him a hot cake in the 2017/18 season that eventual led BC Boncourt to getting his signature. Kaanu was one of the major players in the BCB during the 2019/20 season. He had more than 15 minutes of playing time per match. Over the course of the season, Kaanu scored an average of 2.9 points per game with 4 rebounds on the average in more than 11 games. The stats made him one of the top performers not only in BCB but across the Swiss Basketball League.
Kaanu Olaniyi made the headlines again most recently after forcing his team to look for a replacement due to an injury after tearing a ligament in one of his knees. Being one of the major players in the game, BCB had to rush to the market to fill the void left due to the injury. This has become imperative as the team pursues a top 6 finish in the league.
Kaanu Olaniyi seems poised with continuing making the headlined and the basketball world can only expect more from this talented young lad.
