The Director General of Police is referred to as DGP. In a state or union territory of India, the person with this title is the highest-ranked police officer. They are the leader of the UT police force or the state. Depending on several variables, a state can only have one or more police officers. The DGP is in charge of managing the police forces across the state. He is considered as the head of the state for the police department and is directly under the chief minister.
The Indian Police Services Cabinet appoints the Director General of Police, who holds a three-star post. The highest level in the State Police Hierarchy is DGP, which is not a posting. The DGP has the authority to oversee and examine how its department and disciplinary charges operate. The Commissioner of Police is not required to receive reports from DGPs. In addition, only an IPS officer can advance to the position of DGP. One must pass the UPSC exam to become an IPS officer.
The post of DGP is one of the most decorated designations in the Indian police system. It was held by one of the most well-known personalities, Dr. Chandra Bhanu Satpathy. The iconic personality completed his M Phil in “Civil Aviation Security in India” from Punjab University and a Masters’s Diploma in Public Administration from the Indian Institute of Public Administration. He had served as the DGP and was known for his humanitarian skills. He was the jack of all trades as his artistic skills, such as literature and music, were recognized across the country.

- In this capacity, he renovated the academy extensively and created a police museum for the academy.
- The Hawker Hurricane IIB (Indian Warbird World) was recovered under the guidance of Dr. Satpathy and served as a gate guard at UP Police Academy in Moradabad. It’s rare and vintage collection. Recently Indian Airforce has exchanged with MIG-21 and secured this world war aircraft.

Functions of Director General Police
- The DGP is essential to the state’s government as they are the adviser to matters conducted by the administration of the Police Force.
- DGP holds the authority to make up policies according to the police act. Although, all his orders are to be approved by the government.
- He is in charge of the training and discipline of the force, which entails ensuring law and order and the performance of the police department’s duties.
- During strikes, riots, and industrial disputes, he oversees operations. Such operations continue to be managed and directed by a DGP.
- When there are significant issues with law and order, the DGP is liable to use the reserve police force to help control matters.
- He must provide regular updates to other concerned officers and the chief minister of state on official trips or visits.
