Dogs groom themselves helping their hair follicles grow and supporting general skin health. But dogs do need baths to get rid of the grime. One has to remember though unlike humans, dogs need not be bathed everyday. People tend to overdo it once they start considering the dogs as their family.
Dogs are considered the kid of the family and then bathed liked one daily which is actually wrong for his health. If the question is how often should they be bathed then the answer lies in their breed, coat, lifestyle and health in determining optimal bathing frequency. You can click here to know about the bathing frequency and more.
If the dog is messy, smelly and visibly dirty then it’s a bath time. And if the dog loves bathing, is healthy and requires no special grooming then they can be bathed as often as once a week. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends bathing a dog about once every three months.
Veterinary adviser to PetMD, Dr. Jennifer Coates, states something that will surprise many. She says many healthy dogs without skin conditions are fine with only a bath or two a year. These bathes are only to control “natural doggy odors.”
Do not believe what others say. Instead visit a vet and understand about your pet’s breed. The dogs have different types of coats and a vet can give the right grooming guidance including how often to bathe your dog and what products to use. A dog’s skin has a different pH level than human skin. It’s more sensitive so products used on humans should be avoided on dogs.
