Spring is here, and that’s excellent news. A little over a year ago, spring brought the pandemic and disrupted so many different aspects of our lives.
Today, however, things are getting better, day by day.
As vaccinations increase and are paired with other precautions, things around Houston are starting to resemble more of the normal that we were accustomed to.
That means getting together with friends and family at restaurants, catching an Astros game at Minute Maid Park or Houston Rockets in-person, or even watching any of the Houston Texans’ home games. It means museums, parks, shopping, and businesses will all start operating at closer-to-normal levels.
That said, there are still some precautions to take.
There are a few main points that the CDC recommends for safety during the time of COVID.
Physical distancing, mask-wearing, hand washing, and avoiding large gatherings are still the preferred safety procedures, but it does come to a personal risk assessment.
Even though things appear to be loosening up, there will still be some disruptions for the immediate future. Some businesses will still limit the number of people. They may have had to reduce staff during the pandemic and may not return to entire operations immediately. Personal choices may all come into play.
If you’re uncomfortable jumping into regular activities and need some time to re-adjust, there are still options available for you.
Many businesses have seen the value of offering pick-up services. Others provide remote and virtual services from doctors using “telehealth,” even veterinarians are getting into the game offering online vet services for their clients.
With all that being said, let’s talk about the fun things happening around Houston.
There are plenty of sporting events, foodie events, beer celebrations, and more for you to engage and explore.
Foodie Events To Consider
These events are seasonal ones to consider, and if you can’t make it this year, don’t worry. There will be more on the horizon.
Messina Hof is having an event at their winery, known as the Wines and Roses Festival, in April. It is a family and dog-friendly event, so check out their website for more information.
Tenfold Coffee hosts Top Chef stars Dawn Burrell and Sasha Gruman for a benefit bake sale in mid-April.
Second Servings is running a benefit to end hunger in the Houston area with participating vendors from 93 ’Til, Bayou & Bottle, Dozier’s BBQ, Eighteen36, El Topo, Guard and Grace, Hando and Kanpai Club, Local Foods, One Fifth Southern Comfort, Roots Wine Bar, Ristorante Cavour, Sticky’s Chicken, Tacos A-Go-Go, and Woodshed Smokehouse.
Other places to check out include:
Crawfish Cafe: With a mix of traditional cajun and VietCajun spices, this season’s crawfish are giant. Come down and grab one before they sell out.
Smokin’ Z’s BBQ: Operating out of an iconic turquoise trailer, come on down and grab some of the better-smoked meats just outside of Houston.
Fadi’s Cuisine: Transport yourself to the Mediterranian and Greek Isles at Fadi’s. Traditional Mediterranian fare can be hard to replicate, but Fadi’s is as genuine and tasty as if you were visiting the Mediterranian.
All of our suggestions include dine-in or take-out options depending on your personal preference and concerns.
Houston is home to several great breweries, and our list of the best Houston breweries mirrors that of many online review sites.
Of course, we comprised this list before starting the pandemic, but as we’re closer than ever to a return to our everyday lives, we thought we’d share this list complete with a breakdown of how each beer scored and how we reviewed them.
So check out our list and consider supporting local brews.
As we all know, it’s springtime, and as the saying goes, “hope springs eternal.”
In any other year, that statement may be trite or cliche. Still, after the past year we all went through, spring is once again the symbol for a better tomorrow. Take advantage of the reopening of your local restaurants, breweries, and sporting events as soon as you can.
You’ll have the time of your life. Now get out there and enjoy all that Houston has to offer as the fourth largest city in America. You’ve waited long enough.
