Many people believe there is an easy formula for success, but DJ Xclusive City shows you that’s not the case. Xclusive City followed his passion for music and made his dream of becoming a DJ come true. His love for music started at an early age, he was already interested in the DJs on his radio when he was just 7 years old. Through his story, he shows you it is possible to create your own path to success and encourages you to take your future into your own hands.
“Ever since I was a kid I had a keen sense of music and entertainment. I remember when I was just 7 years old during the summer time I would sit by the radio to record all my favorite songs that came on. I even found a “sweet spot” of when I could call in and actually talk to the disk jockeys before the phone lines got busy. At just 7 years old I was being featured on the radio stations and would talk on the air with the hosts almost every day. They would joke around and say things like “aren’t you supposed to be in school” but I mean it was summer and school was over and although for them it was just a fun cute thing with a 7 year old at the early hours of the morning, for me it was so much more. Little did they know the impact those mornings had on me and how it would end up shaping the course of my life in the entertainment business forever.” Recounts Xclusive City.
From that moment on, Xclusive City knew that his life would be defined by music and that this was something he wanted to pursue. At the age of 12 he began his journey as a DJ which wasn’t always easy, but this did not stop him from continuing to try and reach his goals.
“I was around 12 years old when I started making custom mixtapes for my classmates, using a CD burner and old hip-hop and r&b albums I got from my uncle. Then once I reached high school, I had already made a name for myself selling my mixtape CDs around my neighborhood, local stores, and barbershops. That’s about the time I realized that I really wanted to be a DJ and somehow pursue a career doing that to get a chance to get on the radio too. I spent countless hours practicing and preparing. There were even times when I felt like I wasn’t good enough at it and almost completely threw in the towel with my dream of being a DJ, but a fire kept burning inside of me and I didn’t quit. I pushed harder and let my passion for music fuel me to keep going.” Remembers Xclusive City.
At 16, Xclusive City got his big break and opportunity to begin hosting his own events, which he realized was the only way he was going to attract attention to himself. He did not have the money to create his own parties, but he knew that the local radio station in his hometown did, so he set up a meeting with them and got their support.
“After meeting with the program director and sharing everything I had organized and planned, he decided to sponsor me and backed me both financially and legally. With the radio station now backing me and my event it was full speed ahead. Over a thousand people attended my first event and it was super successful. I went on to host multiple events with the radio station backing me till I was over 18.” Explains Xclusive City.
From this moment on, Xclusive City has amassed a massive following on social media. The events that he has hosted have only gotten larger and more impressive. He even got hired at a radio station and became one of the official DJs for an NBA team. Xclusive City hopes to keep pushing the envelope further and eventually be able to play at large music festivals.
“Even though I currently reside here in Orlando, Florida I’m constantly bouncing back and forth between my hometown Providence, RI and New York City and my dream is to perform at music festivals around the world. I play all genres of music but the most important thing to me is curating a vibe that is different. I think that’s what set me apart from all the other DJs in the city. I was able to make a name for myself to the point where even now I’m currently booked every week shaking up clubs everywhere. In the midst of my DJ career, Dwight “D-Strong” Ricketts, the program director at 104.5 The Beat (WTKS) heard me play one night and next thing I knew he added me as one of the DJs on the Memorial Day Weekend Mix lineup. From there, I built a solid relationship with 104.5 The Beat and iHeartRadio Orlando as well. That led to Viva La Koi asking me to co-host her midday show “Let’s Talk!” and also doing the “12 O’Clock Lunchmix ” at noon weekdays, to eventually landing my very own show Sunday VIBEZ at 10pm every Sunday. While all of this was happening D-Strong put me in contact with the NBA to become one of the official DJs for the Orlando Magic. Long story short, I’m literally a walking testament that hard work and determination pays off. We all have the same 24 hours but what you choose to do with those hours will determine the outcome of your future.” Says Xclusive City.
