On Wednesday the House Education Committee approved the Senate Bill 1, which was meant to address the growing safety needs of Kentucky’s school.
According to the sponsors, the bill is built around hardening targets to secure schools, build an increased culture of connection among the students and promote accountability and oversight related to school safety. This will help in providing more fully-trained resource officers and mental health professionals in the school premises.
The executive director of the Kentucky Center for School Safety, Jon Akers said in an interview, conducted last week that he has been very pleased to see the growth of school safety efforts in the commonwealth. Akers also added that he is grateful about legislation like the Senate Bill 1, the School safety and Resiliency Act is making its way through the Kentucky General Assembly.
Jon Akers stated – the bill is going to do a great job by targeting what Akers defines as “heartware” and “hardware”; that is aside from just changing the procedures and also adding a team of safety officers, it is also trying to address the mental and emotional aspects of school safety. The bill has now been advanced to be fully considered by the House of Representatives.
