If you haven’t heard the name TroyLLF, prepare to hear it more often throughout 2021. This rising rap artist has been consistently grinding for the past decade and it’s finally paying off. Initially a member of the collective “Legends Live Forever,” formed in 2006, the group released several mixtapes and over time have been able to develop a brand. In 2013, the group set out to work on individual projects. Now, the San Francisco artist is bearing the fruits of his labor with this new, yet familiar approach he’s taking to market his music.
With this project Free Play 4, he took the direct-to-consumer approach. Free Play 4 is not only a full-length project but an experience, a capsule, and an exclamation point in 2020. But to kick off the year of 2021, it has been circulating in the streets and on social media, where supporters can directly contact Troy through the Ryan Leslie created the app “Super Phone” andPurchase the album or merch.
The most popular piece attached to the experience is the “Free Play Package” which comes with a digital download of the album, a hard copy, an album t-shirt, and other miscellaneous items inside a custom cereal box that features the album artwork.
Speaking on his $100 music bundle, TroyLLF shared, “Music we feel has been undervalued for a while now. So we decided to raise the price of the art! We held the project from streaming services so we could exercise our “Direct To Consumer” Market. So The late Nipsey Hussle has definitely been an inspiration for the Idea. I’ve been following the steps he took when releasing Crenshaw & Mailbox money, how he had a limited amount for a certain price. He also utilized Ryan Leslie’s app “Superphone” which is something we’ve invested in that has allowed us to stay in contact with our supporters directly.”
He adds, “So with $100 on our end, it comes with a special edition cereal box packed with Autographed Merch, Music, and limited edition items. We Have 100 Cereal Box Packages priced at $100 each, or They can buy the Hard Copy (Signed) for $25 which comes with a digital download to keep. We just wanted to try something different. We’ve flirted with the idea of raising the price, and finding a way to give more than just music! This was the perfect time bet on ourselves.”
In regards to what his future will look like, TroyLL tells us, “In the near future I wanna own my own label. Really wanna take these next couple projects and being able to get in a situation, where we’d be able to get a partnership, be able to distribute on a major level and roll out my own artist and give them opportunities!”
He concludes, “I’m also looking to get into products. Master P has been a great example of staying relevant by creating things the people need and just expanding his brand, and I admire that. So definitely looking to get my hands into more businesses and expand.”
