From the age of 14, Michael Murphy has been working in the car business. Following the end of a young acting/modeling career, he began in his father’s dealership washing cars and then worked in other positions to learn every job. While in college, Michael started his first company as a used car wholesaler and upon finishing college, he went back to his dad’s dealership to develop an online department for each of the locations.
At 23, he became the general sales manager of Toyota of Winter Haven and a year later became one of the youngest general managers in the nation. This early success led Michael and his father to grow their independently run dealerships into Murphy Auto Group (MAG). He was promoted to COO of the operation and in 2016 he became the CEO of MAG.
Last year, at 33, Michael spearheaded the divestment of 2 dealerships and the purchasing of another automotive group as the growth of Murphy Auto Group (MAG) continued. He now holds the title of President and CEO of his company that owns 5 automotive retail dealerships and seven ancillary and support companies. Through success and trials, he credits his achievements to his ability to adapt principles to current markets and promotion platforms along with his capacity to innovate through crises such as COVID-19 (where he recorded multiple successful months). His advice to young entrepreneurs is to realize that “Fear equals motivation! What you are afraid of can make you stronger and grow your courage”.
