If you’re like most of the world, we are ready to get out of isolation and back into the world, specifically through travel. If you’re in America, outside of essential travel, most of the world isn’t an available destination for you. What a fantastic time to get to know your own country! There are so many amazing and genuinely awe-inspiring sights to be seen here, and some may just be right in your own backyard. If you’re in the Mid-Atlantic area of the country, consider checking some of these destinations off of your list.
Washington D.C.
Chances are, if you’re already living in the Mid-Atlantic, you’ve been to D.C. a time or two. However, going on a weekend or several days to get away and really playing the tourist is eye-opening. You, of course, have several museums that are “must see’s,” most notably being the Smithsonian. You’ve got trendy shopping all through Georgetown and world-class dining around every corner. Take the opportunity to see the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution in person and tour the Capitol Building. If you’re visiting during the springtime, the Cherry Blossoms are world-renowned and one of the most beautiful experiences to behold.
Charlottesville, Virginia
If the historical experiences in Washington mentioned above interest you, Charlottesville, Virginia, is a stop you’ll genuinely enjoy. Thomas Jefferson’s influence can be felt at every corner in this idyllic small town. It is home to The University of Virginia and Jefferson’s home Monticello. Charlottesville has been voted one of the happiest cities in the U.S. and one of the best places to live. There is no shortage of wineries, breweries, and mountain views everywhere you look. Luxury shopping is abundant for such a small town sprinkled throughout Main Street and the pedestrian mall, the countries’ longest pedestrian mall. Dave Matthews Band came from Charlottesville, and there is literally always live music to be found all throughout the town. It never disappoints!
Atlantic City, New Jersey
Were you looking to spice things up a little bit more for your getaway? Just head to Atlantic City! It’s like a miniature Las Vegas, and the Boardwalk is an experience all on its own! There are beaches too, so throw on one of your spiciest red bikinis and take in the sights beachside. There’s plenty of casinos to visit if you’re looking to press your luck and some of the best restaurants in the state are in Atlantic City. If you’re bringing children on your trip, the Atlantic City Aquarium and the Ripleys Believe It Or Not are great stops to make. There’s even an amusement park in the city! It would be best if you also took the time to visit the New Jersey Korean War Memorial, the In the Line of Duty Sculpture, and the African American Heritage Museum.
All in all, Atlantic City is definitely a get loose and have a fun time trip. Does what happens in Atlantic City stay in Atlantic City? You tell me.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Ah, the city of Brotherly Love. Seriously, if you’ve never been to Philly, add it to your list of places to go this Summer. Aside from the unique culture and food to experience just walking the city streets, the city’s history is dense. You can see where the Declaration of Independence was debated and signed, Independence Hall, and the Liberty Bell. If art is an interest to you, the famous Love statue and the Rocky statue are prime selfie opportunities, not to mention the Philadelphia Museum of Art. And, of course, unless you’re a vegan or vegetarian, you simply have to enjoy an authentic Philly Cheesesteak – best obtained from a food truck!
New York, New York
There’s not much that needs to be said about why you need to visit The Big Apple. Broadway, shopping, food, sights! There is something for everyone in New York City and a vibe and magic all its own. Many of us in the Mid Atlantic region have already been; even if that’s the case, you may not have seen all the city has to offer you. Be sure to check out the Empire State Building and the Brooklyn Bridge. Times Square and Central Park are givens. But, one of the best things about New York City is the trip is worth it on its own just to walk the streets and take in the people and the culture of individual boroughs and neighborhoods.
Lastly, it goes without saying, as we venture out into the world, we not only pack our masks and sanitizer but come ready with a lot of kindness. The world is healing, and societies have collectively gone through so much together this last year. Let’s spread love wherever we decide to go.
