Many people are into recycling, and rubber items, such as old rubber tires, are likely candidates for various recycling projects. But if you use rubber tires for your recycling projects, they will look better and more attractive if you paint them in bright colors.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to paint something made of rubber because the paint tends to chip after a few days. In addition, rubber is not porous, so it does not absorb the paint. Is there a rubber paint that will stick to rubber for a long time?
Rubber types and the right paint
One of the first things you need to do is identify the types of rubber. The material can be soft or hard. For example, if you want to decorate a rubber swim cap, it will be impossible to have the paint stay on the surface without cracking because the cap is soft and flexible. However, expect the paint to peel with constant use if painting a flexible hard rubber handle although the paint is not expected to crack.
The trick is to choose the type of paint that will work well with the material. Another thing to consider is where you will use the rubber items you will be painting.
Removable rubber coating
This type of paint comes in a spray can. It will provide a good cover for the rubber item and stay on until you peel it off. It is suitable for projects that you may decide to change later. One good thing about it is that you can see how the paint job will look. If you change your mind, you can peel off the paint and use another color.
Acrylic paint
If you use rubber items for indoor projects, you can choose acrylic paint. Apply two coats of acrylic paint, allowing the first layer to dry before applying the second layer. Seal the acrylic paint with a paint sealer after the coatings are completely dry.
Exterior paint
If you are going to put the rubber tires outside, such as when you use recycled tires as planters, flower pots, yard art, or swings, your primary concern is durability. Exterior or outdoor paint will be excellent for this type of project. The outdoor paint tolerates the elements better. However, you can still increase its durability by first coating the rubber item with an exterior primer. The primer provides a better surface for paint adhesion. After the primer is completely dry, apply the exterior paint. You can choose to spray exterior paint or buy the type you can use with a brush or roller.
Commercial-grade marine paint
If your project is more serious, choose commercial-grade marine paint used on swimming pools and boats. Marine paints are durable and resist fading, cracking, and chipping. You can safely apply it to rubber surfaces. Marine paint is waterproof and weatherproof, and you do not need to seal it either.
Plan and know the type of rubber you want to paint and choose the paint that will be most suitable for your project. Also, keep in mind that you should ensure that the surface is clean, dry, and adequately prepared to take on layers of paint.
