Being a mom comes with a lot of responsibilities, especially if you are going on a road trip. Throw children into the mix and not only do you have to look out for your well-being, look out for theirs! Obviously, being a mama means having a lot on your plate; however, you shouldn’t let this stop you from traveling and living the life of your dreams.
It’s important to introduce our kids to the wonders and amazing adventures of traveling. While traveling with children means much more gear, we will introduce you to some must-have items and tips to help you remain prepared for your next road trip.
Oil Change And Car Maintenance
If your car isn’t ready for the trip, how will you be? Before you leave to ensure you and your baby’s safety–make sure you open up that car hood and check the engine and fluids. You may be due for an oil change which is critical to have done before traveling long distances. If you realize your car needs brake maintenance and you’re the DIY type, consider saving some money by bleeding brakes by yourself; otherwise, take your car to a trusted mechanic right away. A roadside assistance service membership can also be extremely helpful in case your car breaks down. Finally, make sure you have a spare tire just in case, too! It’s better to be safe than sorry!
Car Seat
Depending on the age and height of your kids, they may have to use a car seat until they are 8 years old. Typically, children will change over to booster seats as they get older. Therefore, a car seat is essential for road trips, car rides, and safety. Purchasing a car seat that is safe and reliable will eliminate any fear or worries while you are on the go. There are many great car seats that are versatile and can convert from a car seat to a booster seat easily. That way, as your child grows, you won’t have to buy a whole new product.
Sunscreen
Sun protection is important for you and your family! As you’re traveling or rushing out of the house, it’s easy to forget to apply sunscreen. Contrary to popular belief, you can still experience sun damage in the car. In fact, most skin cancer occurs on the left side of people’s faces because that is where their driver’s window is. If you have younger children, their skin may also be more sensitive– so it’s important to protect them.
Keeping a sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher is critical for travel. Keep it handy in your backpack at all times. That way, if you forget to apply at home, you’ll have it handy to lather before arriving at your destination.
Electronics
Let’s be real, kids need entertainment for longer travel or else they start to get antsy. Giving them access to electronics during travel is okay– and doesn’t make you a bad parent. In fact, there are many opportunities for education on electronic devices.
You can ensure you are monitoring what games or apps they’re using by creating parental controls. There are educational apps like hangman, PBS kids, and Math Ninja. Downloading reading material on a Kindle or Ipad is also a great option to keep your children’s minds active!
A blanket
Keep a blanket with your other travel supplies. Long car rides call for naps and comfort– meaning a blanket is essential.Your blanket can also be used to nurse your baby or to sit on the beach. Don’t forget this item as it’s very versatile to all your road trip needs. Most kids will beg for their blankey and could potentially throw a fit if they don’t have it, so remember that too!
Reusable water bottle
Your family needs to stay hydrated and healthy. Purchasing a reusable water bottle is the perfect solution for traveling with children. You can buy a large hydro flask which will last you for longer hours. It may be a good idea to bring a reusable bottle for each of your family members so you don’t all have to share one! Best part is, the ice will stay in your water bottle for longer so the water is colder!
