The senate recently passed 2 measures in a unanimous manner addressing the special education sector. One among the measures clearing the chamber on Saturday has been passed to increase state funding meant for the special education.
This increase in the funding shall be applicable by changing current cost multiplier which is used to calculate total amount of special education funding required for each pupil received by the districts. By increasing this multiplier straight from 0.9609 to 1, any school district that receives $1000 for one pupil, shall receive $2000 from henceforth.
An amendment included to the Senate floor also adds the very same cost multiplier for special education to the incarcerated youth that qualify for being a part of special education. Senate staff also mentioned that close to 500 students will also qualify for another special funding.
Now, the 2nd measure introduces several changes to the existing policy with regards to the special education. This includes that the school districts are required to provide a minimum of 1 and a half day for professional learning dedicated to special education related topics. Additionally, it also requires the school districts to summon an ongoing committee for special education advisory.
