Serena Williams, eight-times Miami champion, was featured in the news recently when she withdrew from her second consecutive WTA event of the Miami Tennis Open, due to a knee injury.
She has already 23 grand slam championships to her name but had to unfortunately make an early exit from the Indian Wells game. Her opponent was Garbine Muguruza. Tournament officials identified the reason to be a virus, which Serena had earlier cited as extreme dizziness and fatigue.
“I am disappointed to withdraw from the Miami Open due to a left knee injury,” said Williams.
While appreciating the Miami Open for conducting the amazing event, the American tennis player also added that playing at the Hard Rock Stadium was an amazing experience and wishes to play next year in Miami.
Williams was scheduled to play against China’s Wang Qiang on Monday.
It was in her opening game in 2015 against Sweden’s Rebecca Peterso, that Serena Williams earned most recent of her eight titles as Miami Champion.
Having won her last title at the Australian Open in 2017, Serena Williams was looking forward to playing well in the 35th Edition of the Miami Open.
This year, tennis spectators were surprised when Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh, defeated Naomi Osaka, the recently crowned world No.1, in a score of 4-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-3. Osaka recently separated from her coach Sascha Bajin last month, soon after winning her second consecutive grand slam title at the Australian Open.
Petra Kvitova, though lost to Osaka in the Melbourne Final, displayed success in the Miami Open tournament by beating Croatia’s Donna Vekic by a score of, 6-4 3-6 6-4.
In the men’s draw, Roger Federer defeated Radu Albot while Novak Djokovic won over Bernard Tomic at the opening games. However, Alexander Zverev, the tournament’s second seed was defeated by Spain’s David Ferrer.
