The new year 2020 will be much happier for Thailand native people because the Thai environment minister has announced a major agreement for larger retailers, plastic manufacturers and department stores to stop handing out single-use plastic bags to customers. During the past few years, a large number of retailers have come up with many promotions to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags. But their attempts to reduce plastic use were not much real and the huge amount of plastic waste was generated by these companies.
The environment minister Varawut Silpa-archa said that the Environment Ministry invited many Thai partners to join this campaign to reduce the plastic in the country. If this campaign gets successful, then Thailand will leave the list of the major generator of the waste and sea garbage.
The invited Thai partners are Central Group, The Mall Group, CP All (owners of 7Eleven), Siam Makro, Robinsons, Bangchak Retail, Big C Supercentre, Index Living Mall and PTT, as well as trade associations such as the Plastic Industry Club and Thai Retailers Association. All these partners have pledged to stop using single-use plastic bags.
For the eve of the new year, people can use digital images, gifs, wishes, messages, quotes and much more after visiting https://happynewyear2020.com/, rather than giving plastic made cards and gifts. From January 2020, Thai people have to bring their own bags to carry goods from the stores. The Ministry is also aiming to impose ban by 2022 on Styrofoam food packages plus other single-use plastic items such as lightweight plastic bags, straws, and cups.
