As an entrepreneur, you should always be looking for ways to better yourself. You are the driving force behind your own success, so working on important qualities in your personality should be of paramount importance. We all know that attending training courses, logging in for webinars, and learning from our superiors are great ways of developing ourselves, but what about some of the more unusual ways? Whether you want to break up your routine, have a little fun with it, or just feel like you’ve stagnated a little in your progress, these methods will definitely spice up your self-improvement timetable, helping you to become the entrepreneur you know you can be.
Learning to Play Poker
One of the most important strings to a young entrepreneur’s bow is the ability to cope under pressure. There are plenty of ways to learn this skill, but one of the most fun is by learning to play poker. Whether you choose to play poker online, or you play in person with friends, the fast-paced nature of this game forces you to become a master of your nerves. As well as learning to cope under pressure, this game will also teach you two more useful skills.
The first is learning who to trust. As any keen poker player will tell you, being able to spot a tell is an important asset to the game. Whilst in your business life, you probably won’t be scrutinizing your peers so closely, being able to spot those who look uncomfortable might save you from a bad business deal in the future. The final quality that poker playing will teach you is to work with the hand that you’re given. Sometimes one of your ventures might start out on the wrong foot, but learning to work with the tools that you have and the space that you’re in could help to turn things around for that venture.
Early Morning Meditation in Nature
Meditation is no big secret, for many of us, it is already a part of our morning routine. Multiple studies have shown that meditating can decrease stress and anxiety levels, as well as improve attention spans and help us to sleep better, so it’s a vital tool to have in your arsenal. However, some of us find sitting still and meditating almost impossible.
Thankfully, there is a way around this. Set your morning alarm clock to wake up with the sun and head out into nature. Walking meditation is hugely popular as it allows us to move our bodies, embrace the natural world, and have a focus for our meditation. Begin by spending a minute focusing on each of your senses. How does the air feel against your skin, what smells can you pick up, how does your breath sound? Being introspective in this way is much less challenging for many of us. The added benefit, of course, is that you can reap the rewards of an early morning walk as well. Increasing activity can boost your metabolism, help you to feel more alert and awake by the time you need to be working, and being close to nature has been proven to reduce stress.
