The journey to music for singer, songwriter, and producer Ayye Moe was a quick and life-changing decision. After deciding to give up the chance to return overseas for another season of pro basketball, he discovered a desire to pursue music and followed it. Now, looking back on his career that started in 2017, he relates that his biggest achievement has been becoming a musician. Ayye Moe explains, “Regardless of what people thought, I went after it. Learning to sing is also right up there [as an achievement]. I still have a lot of learning to do. I have only been singing for a few years now. Singing is not easy to learn. It is very difficult, and it requires so much dedication and time, and practice. It is also scarier than anything I have ever come across on a basketball court. When you get on stage and sing acapella, it is never an easy feeling. Luckily, I always believed I was good. Even when I was not.”
In a personal interview, he also discussed those who have inspired him musically. He says, “My musical influences vary because I listen to artists for different things. I have two lists, though, that has remained pretty set in stone for a long time. I have one list of artists who I listen to because I appreciate their style of music.” Ayye Moe’s first list includes the likes of Trey Songz, R Kelly, and Justin Love, among others. Next, he described his second list, which are artists he listens to from a technique standpoint and, almost like studying film, uses it as an opportunity to analyze their voice and how they operate it. This list boasts Avery Wilson, Pink, Jessie J, and Adam Lambert. This variety of influence has greatly helped in Ayye Moe’s progression from simply a rap and hip-hop artist to a singer and songwriter.
Ayye Moe initially did not receive full support from those close to him when he gave up basketball to pursue music and, though he has since seen success in his musical pursuits, there are those that still doubt or disagree with his decisions. He describes this as the most difficult challenge he faces day to day. Yet, his resolve and mindset have gotten him to this point, and he is confident it will take him to new levels of success.
